Just because it landed the Deutsche
Bank Championships last year, the TPC
of Boston wasn't going to just rest
on its laurels. No, course officials
used last year's inaugural event as
something of a free consultation visit
from 150 of the world's best golfers.
As the second Deutsche Bank Championship
tees off this week in Norton, Mass.,
the players will notice a newfound premium
on accuracy off the tee because of several
narrowed fairways. And they'll notice
that 12 greens have been relieved of
their extreme undulations.
"That seemed to be the recurring
theme -- that the fairways were too
wide and the greens had too much slope,"
said Head Golf Professional Douglas
Errhalt. "We heard of a lot of
those comments during the tournament
because you've got the best golfers
in the world playing your course ...
and they know what's great and what's
just good.
"We had benefit of having 150 sets
of eyes check out our course. Some of
them like it and some of them didn't
... and we took those comments to heart."
Big hitters will surely notice that
their advantage has been taken away.
Fairways that used to taper out at further
distances have been hemmed in. Gone
with the expansive landing areas is
about 40-50 yards of roll, which Errhalt
thinks will level the playing field
off the tee. Nobody's going to want
to land in the extremely thick rough
off of the fairways, as that could mean
the difference between birdie and bogey. |
